1. A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.
Prov 15.30
The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. ;Prov 22.1
A GOOD name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. ;

2. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
2Cor 7.10
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. ;

4. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

5. It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Ps 141.5
Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities. ;Prov 13.18
Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. ;Prov 15.31-32
The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. ;

6. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

They compassed me about like bees: they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. ;Ecl 2.2
I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it? ;

7. Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.
Ex 23.8
And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous. ;Deut 16.19
Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous. ;

8. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
Prov 14.29
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly. ;

9. Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.
Prov 14.17
He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. ;Prov 16.32
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. ;Iac 1.19
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: ;

10. Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.
