1. The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
Prov 15.20A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother. ;
Prov 17.21-25He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy. ;
Prov 19.13A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. ;
Prov 29.3-15Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance. ;
2. Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.
Ps 49.6They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ;
Prov 11.4Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. ;
Luc 12.19-20And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ;
Dan 4.27Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity. ;
3. The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.
Ps 10.14Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. ;
Ps 34.9-10O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. ;
Ps 37.25I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. ;
4. He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Prov 12.24The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute. ;
Prov 19.15Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. ;
Prov 13.4The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. ;
Prov 21.5The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want. ;
5. He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.
Prov 12.4A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. ;
Prov 17.2A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. ;
Prov 19.26He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach. ;
6. Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
Prov 10.11The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. ;
Est 7.8Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face. ;
7. The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.
Ps 9.5-6Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. ;
Ps 112.6Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. ;
Ecl 8.10And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. ;
8. The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.
Prov 10.10He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall. ;
9. He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.
Ps 23.4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. ;
Prov 28.18Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. ;
Isa 33.15-16He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; ;
