1. From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; ;

2. Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

3. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

4. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ;Ioan 15.19
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. ;Ioan 17.14
I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. ;Gal 1.10
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. ;

5. Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ;Gen 8.21
And the LORD smelled a sweet savor; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. ;Num 11.29
And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! ;Prov 21.10
The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes. ;

6. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. ;Ps 138.6
Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. ;Prov 3.34
Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly. ;Prov 29.23
A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. ;Mat 23.12
And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. ;Luc 1.52
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. ;Luc 14.11
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. ;Luc 18.14
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. ;1Pet 5.5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. ;

7. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ;1Pet 5.9
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. ;

8. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
2Cron 15.2
And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you. ;Isa 1.16
Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; ;1Pet 1.22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: ;1Ioan 3.3
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. ;Iac 1.8
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. ;

9. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
Mat 5.4
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. ;

10. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
Iov 22.29
